Dog Canyon Ranch
The
Dog Canyon Ranch is located approximately 70 mile southwest of
Carlsbad, New Mexico in the Brokeoff Mountains of Otero County.
The ranch is accessed by paved New Mexico State Highway 137
through El Paso Gap then county and private maintained roadways
to the ranch headquarters. The headquarters is located on the
eastern boundary of the ranch approximately 2 miles west of the
Otero County Road G-14. The land status of the Dog Canyon ranch is
comprised of 1,283 Deeded Acres, 16,844 Federal Lease Acres and
1,972 New Mexico Sate Lease Acres.
The improvements at the headquarters include a main residence,
one large barn, welded pipe corrals with livestock scales. The
improvements are adequate for the operation of the ranch.
The Main Residence is currently not occupied. The structure is
need of some interior and exterior repairs. Electricity and
telephone service is extended to the headquarter improvements.
Storage Barn that has interior horse stalls, tack room and work
area.
The primary set of livestock corrals is located at the
headquarters. The pens are designed into several holding pens,
sorting alley, loading chute and livestock scales. Construction
is welded steel pipe.
The terrain of the ranch varies from nearly level on Dog Canyon
along the eastern boundary of the ranch to steep rough and rocky
hills and canyons along the western boundary. Forage is
excellent to included palatable grasses and forbs. The length of
the growing season allows for extended opportunities for grass
growth.
The ranch is watered by two wells that are equipped with a deep
well pump jack and an electric submersible pump. The water is
approximately 2,500 feet deep. The wells service an extensive
pipeline system with a series of storage tanks and water troughs
that are scattered throughout the ranch. The system is currently
not in use.
Additional water is provided by numerous earthen tanks that
catch and store run-off water for livestock and wildlife
consumption. These are a dependable source of water when there
is adequate rainfall in the area.
The ranch is partitioned into eleven larger pastures and several
small holding traps. The traps are located in the vicinity of
the headquarters and the La Paloma Camp. The camp is located in
the center area of the ranch. Improvements at the camp are
minimal with two barns and a small set of working pens.
Electricity and telephone service is extended to the camp. All
pastures have at least two sources of permanent water when in
use. The ranch is currently supporting approximately 170 head of
cattle. Wildlife includes mule deer, barbary sheep, fox,
coyotes, bobcats and an occasional mountain lion. Mule deer and
barbary sheep hunting opportunities are excellent on the ranch
and throughout the area.
The climate in the general area of the ranch is semi-arid within
the northern extension of the Chihauhuan Desert. The growing
season is 1160 to 180 days extending from the first to middle of
April to the middle to the end of October. Annual precipitation
varies, but typically from 10 to 12 inches, which includes
winter snowfall. Snowfall is normally insignificant, but several
snow events may occur during the winter months. Snowfall does
not typically remain on the ground for any significant amount of
time. Most of the precipitation falls in the form of rain during
summer thunderstorms, which can be intense. The general
southeasterly circulation from the Gulf of Mexico brings
moisture for these storms. July and August are the rainiest
months.
